Tucked away in Cook County in Illinois, United States is the small village of Franklin Park. Cooks County is one of the second most populated counties in the United States with a population of 5, 294, 664 people. The county has three different townships and has 130 different incorporated municipalities. Chicago is the largest county seat in Cook county and consists of almost 54% of Cook County’s’ population.
Franklin Park has a population of 19,800 people with an area of 4.7 square miles. The number of families residing in this area is 4,765 with a racial mix of whites, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians as well as Latinos. Franklin Park is an industrial centre that has cleverly merged with its residential neighborhood. Growth and development began in this small village with the German farmers coming and settling here in the early 1840’s.
The setting up of the railroad tracks by the Atlantic & Pacific railroad Company in the 1870’s further fuelled the villages’ growth. In the 1890’s, the real estate possibilities of this region were discovered by Franklin who capitalized on the railroad settings and lured prospective buyers to this village by organizing train rides on Sunday. Having built a pavilion on Rose Street where he hosted potential buyers by providing free food and beverages, organizing speeches as well as organizing song and dance events that led to major sales. This led to the inception of the Franklin Park community in 1890’s.
The community kept witnessing its growth through the century and with the turn of the century the first industry in this area was set up. A donation from Lesser Franklin was used to set up an iron foundry in this area. Another land donation by Franklin us used to build the Cooper Company. A number of Polish, Slavic and Italian immigrants took up jobs as workers in these factories. World War II further propelled the growth of Franklin Park as an industrial area. Douglas Aircraft and Buick Motors set up shop in this area as a result of the national preparedness program. This move towards industrialization continued and by the turn of the 1940’s, 40 companies were headquartered in this area.
With the turn of the decade another 155 companies were added in the Franklin Park industrial portfolio. This small village has been on an expansion mode since its inception and in the 1990’s was given possession of another 65 acres and took the place of the fourth largest industrial space in Illinois.
